Buying a used car can be a really difficult experience. You run all day looking at cars, dealing with strangers and getting dirty. Besides all this, you will probably need to buy a car as soon as possible. This article is intended to guide you through this difficult period, and protect yourself against the pitfalls of buying a used car.
The first thing you want to do is: understanding the situation: Is it really necessary to buy another car? If your car is your current style of life, and needs only little repairs, you may want to reconsider. If the car is no longer credible, or the cost of repairs is almost equal to what you would pay to replace your car, the best option is probably to buy another car.
Assuming you go ahead and buy a used car you will need to think about where to look for it. My personal rule first purchase of a car is not to bother with the dealers. They ask too much, and some of them are just simply untrue. Some great places to watch are newspapers and online sources that you may find on Internet. Cars that are sold on the roadside may be useful to consider as well.
So of course we have my personal favorite place to buy used cars: charities, such as the Salvation Army. These places are a bit harder to find, but they can be a goldmine in so far as cars are concerned. When someone donates their car, it is beneficial for many people, for several reasons. For the person who donated the car, it is easier to sell, tax deductible, and can even help support a good cause. For the charity, it is a valuable source of income, and for the buyer, it may be a good deal. I bought my last two cars through a charity, and I can tell you they were both excellent, but needed some minor repairs before they are roadworthy.
Once a car has caught your attention, it is time to do some research on this particular brand, model and year of the vehicle. Want to know what parts need regular replacement, so you know what to look for when inspecting the vehicle. You also want to know if the car has a reliable reputation, and if spare parts are ready available. If you have found the car, take it to the mechanic, the one you trust. If he says it’s ok, buy the car and begin your new life with a new car.
